Is your toddler not talking yet, or using fewer words than other children their age? Language delay in toddlers is more common than many parents realise, and early intervention can make a significant difference. At WonderKids in Malta, our speech and language pathologist provides gentle, play-based therapy to help toddlers develop their communication skills.
What Is a Language Delay?
A language delay occurs when a child’s language development falls behind what is expected for their age. This can involve:
- Expressive language delay: The child understands language but uses fewer words or shorter sentences than expected
- Receptive language delay: The child has difficulty understanding words, instructions, or questions
- Combined delay: Both understanding and use of language are behind
Toddlers who are slow to start talking are sometimes called “late talkers.” While some late talkers catch up without intervention, others benefit significantly from early speech therapy.
Language Development Milestones
Every child develops at their own pace, but general milestones include:
- 12 months: First words, responds to their name, understands simple instructions
- 18 months: Uses around 20 words, points to things they want, understands more than they can say
- 24 months: Uses at least 50 words, begins combining two words (such as “more juice” or “daddy go”), follows simple two-step instructions
- 36 months: Uses three-word sentences or longer, asks simple questions, can be understood by familiar adults most of the time
If your toddler is not meeting these milestones, it does not necessarily mean there is a problem, but an assessment can provide reassurance or early support.
Why Early Intervention Matters
Research consistently shows that early intervention for language delays leads to better outcomes. The toddler years are a critical period for language development, and the brain is most receptive to learning language during this time. Starting therapy early can:
- Close the gap between your child and their peers more quickly
- Prevent secondary difficulties such as frustration, behavioural challenges, and social withdrawal
- Support school readiness so your child starts school with stronger communication skills
- Reduce the need for more intensive therapy later
How WonderKids Helps Toddlers with Language Delays
Assessment
We begin with a comprehensive assessment of your toddler’s communication skills, including their understanding of language, vocabulary, use of gestures, social communication, and play skills. We also gather information about your child’s developmental and medical history.
Parent-Focused Therapy
For toddlers, much of our therapy is delivered through parent coaching. We teach you powerful, evidence-based strategies to boost your child’s language throughout daily routines — during mealtimes, bath time, play, and outings. These strategies include following your child’s lead, expanding on what they say, and creating opportunities for communication.
Play-Based Sessions
Direct therapy sessions are entirely play-based, using toys, books, songs, bubbles, and games that motivate your toddler to communicate. Sessions are fun and engaging, never stressful.
