Every child experiences the world through their senses. For most children, the brain organises this constant stream of information automatically. But for some, sensory signals become muddled or overwhelming — making everyday situations like a busy classroom, a noisy party, or getting dressed feel genuinely difficult. At WonderKids in Malta, our occupational therapists provide specialist sensory integration therapy that helps these children process the world around them and take a fuller part in daily life.
Sensory integration therapy is a core part of our sensory integration service.
What Is Sensory Processing?
Sensory processing is how the nervous system receives, organises, and responds to information from the senses. As well as the familiar five senses, two others are central to sensory integration:
- The vestibular sense (movement and balance), based in the inner ear
- Proprioception (body awareness), based in the muscles and joints
When these systems work smoothly together, a child can sit still to listen, judge how hard to push a door, tolerate the feel of clothing, and stay calm in a busy room. When they do not, daily life can become a series of challenges.
Signs of Sensory Processing Difficulties
Children process sensory input differently, and difficulties can show up in different ways:
- Over-responsive (sensory avoiding): distressed by loud sounds, certain textures, clothing labels, bright lights, or messy play; covers ears; gags at food textures
- Under-responsive (sensory seeking): craves movement, spinning, and crashing; touches everything; chews on objects; seems not to notice pain or mess
- Sensory-based motor difficulties: clumsiness, poor coordination, difficulty with balance, or trouble learning new physical skills
Many children show a mix of these. You can read more in our guide to understanding sensory processing challenges.
How Sensory Integration Therapy Helps
Therapy takes place in a purpose-designed environment with equipment such as swings, climbing apparatus, crash mats, and tactile materials. The therapist follows the child’s lead, presenting carefully graded sensory and motor challenges that are fun but achievable. This “just-right challenge” helps the child’s nervous system learn to process and respond to sensory input more effectively.
The goal is never simply to play — it is to build the underlying skills that allow a child to:
- Stay calm and regulated through the day
- Concentrate and engage at school
- Tolerate everyday experiences like dressing, washing hair, and mealtimes
- Move with greater coordination and confidence
- Join in with peers and family activities
Our Approach at WonderKids
We begin with a comprehensive assessment of your child’s sensory profile, drawing on standardised tools, clinical observation, and your own insights as parents. From there we set meaningful, functional goals — focused on the things that matter to your child and family — and design an individualised therapy plan.
Because sensory needs do not end when a session does, we also help families build a sensory diet of simple, practical strategies to use at home and school, so progress carries over into everyday life.
Why Choose WonderKids?
Our occupational therapists, including Ema Bartolo (BSc OT, MSc Sensory Integration) and Maria Balzan (BSc OT, MSc Sensory Integration), hold advanced postgraduate training in sensory integration. We offer no waiting lists, evidence-based therapy, and a warm, child-friendly environment at our Malta clinics.
