Toilet training is a major milestone, but for some children it does not go as smoothly as parents hope. If your child is struggling with toileting — whether they are resistant to using the toilet, having frequent accidents, or showing anxiety around the bathroom — you are not alone. At WonderKids in Malta, our occupational therapists provide gentle, effective support for children with toilet training difficulties.
Why Do Some Children Struggle with Toilet Training?
Successful toileting requires a complex combination of body awareness, sensory processing, motor skills, routine, and emotional readiness. Difficulties can arise when any of these factors are challenging for a child:
- Sensory sensitivities: Some children find the sensations associated with toileting overwhelming — the cold seat, the sound of flushing, the feeling of sitting on the toilet, or the sensation of needing to go
- Poor body awareness: Children with reduced interoception (the sense of what is happening inside the body) may not recognise when they need to use the toilet
- Motor difficulties: The sequence of pulling down clothing, sitting correctly, wiping, and redressing requires fine and gross motor coordination
- Anxiety: Some children develop anxiety around the toilet, perhaps after a negative experience or due to general anxiety
- Routine and transition challenges: Children who struggle with changes in routine may resist the shift from nappies to the toilet
- Developmental differences: Children with autism, ADHD, or developmental delays may take longer to achieve toileting independence
How WonderKids Helps
Our occupational therapists take a holistic, sensory-informed approach to toilet training difficulties:
Comprehensive Assessment
We assess your child’s sensory processing, body awareness, motor skills, and emotional readiness for toileting. We also review their toileting history, current patterns, and the home bathroom environment.
Sensory Strategies
For children with sensory sensitivities, we develop strategies to make the toileting experience more comfortable. This may include modifications to the bathroom environment, gradual desensitisation to toilet-related sensations, and teaching the child to manage their sensory responses.
Body Awareness Training
We use activities that build interoceptive awareness — helping children recognise and respond to their body’s signals that they need to use the toilet.
Visual Supports and Routines
We create visual schedules and step-by-step guides that help children understand and follow the toileting routine independently. Consistent routines help children feel safe and confident.
Parent Coaching
Parents are the key to successful toilet training. We provide you with practical strategies, timing guidance, and a structured approach tailored to your child’s specific needs. We help you create a positive, pressure-free toileting environment at home.
