Anxiety is one of the most common mental health challenges in childhood, and it can affect every aspect of a child’s life, from school to friendships to family time. At WonderKids in Malta, we provide gentle, effective therapy to help children understand their anxiety, build coping skills, and regain confidence.
Understanding Childhood Anxiety
It is normal for children to feel worried or nervous at times. However, when worry becomes persistent, overwhelming, or starts to interfere with daily activities, it may be an anxiety disorder. Childhood anxiety can present in many forms:
- Generalised anxiety: Excessive worry about many different things, including school, health, family, and the future
- Separation anxiety: Intense distress when away from parents or caregivers
- Social anxiety: Fear of social situations, being judged, or speaking in front of others
- Specific phobias: Intense fear of particular things such as animals, the dark, or medical procedures
- School-related anxiety: Resistance to attending school, physical symptoms before school, or distress during the school day
How Anxiety Affects Children
Anxious children may appear clingy, irritable, or withdrawn. They may complain of tummy aches, headaches, or feeling sick. Some children avoid activities they once enjoyed, have trouble sleeping, or experience frequent meltdowns. Anxiety can affect concentration, learning, social relationships, and self-esteem.
Parents often feel helpless watching their child struggle with worry. The good news is that childhood anxiety responds very well to therapy, especially when support is provided early.
How WonderKids Helps Anxious Children
Our team takes a holistic approach to childhood anxiety, combining psychological strategies with occupational therapy techniques:
- Understanding anxiety together: We help children understand what anxiety is, how it feels in their body, and why it happens, using age-appropriate language and activities
- Building a coping toolkit: Children learn practical strategies such as deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, grounding techniques, and the use of sensory tools
- Gradual exposure: We gently and systematically help children face feared situations at their own pace, building confidence step by step
- Cognitive strategies: For older children, we teach them to identify and challenge unhelpful thinking patterns
- Sensory regulation: Our occupational therapists help children understand their sensory needs and use regulation strategies to manage the physical feelings of anxiety
- Parent coaching: We equip parents with strategies to support their child at home, including how to respond to anxious behaviours, set supportive routines, and encourage brave behaviour
What to Expect
We begin with a thorough assessment at our Mosta or Zebbug clinic, understanding your child’s specific worries, triggers, and strengths. Therapy sessions are 45 to 60 minutes, held weekly, and always tailored to your child’s age and needs. Younger children engage through play, stories, and art. Older children work more directly on cognitive and behavioural strategies.
Progress is shared with parents regularly, and we provide home strategies after every session.
